Junior Rowing Programs

For SMUS students interested in rowing for the school please contact Head Coach, Susanne Walker Curry directly at Susanne.Walker-Curry@smus.ca

For students interested in rowing for the GNRC Junior Program, please contact the office at 250-995-2290.  Last year the club saw much growth under the strong leadership of Head Coach, Scott Swinkels.  With strong performances at all the regattas we attended, including our club's first medals at the Brentwood Regatta and CSSRAs, we are on a strong trajectory forward.

It was hard to say good-bye to 10 of our graduating athletes this year, but with an ever growing base in our Junior B and C ranks, we continue to be poised for success.  We are always accepting new rowers with any level of experience (including none!).  We are equipped with well trained coaches to help our athletes reach for their goals.

For more information please contact the rowing office at 250-995-2290.

Winter Training | See Pricing Below

The Winter Training program is designed to support junior athletes in being well prepared for the Spring Junior Rowing season and to further develop their technique, power, and endurance. Training schedule varies by age group (see schedule below). Due to daylight hours all weekday sessions will be on land and will be a mixture of erg and cross training sessions. Erg sessions will focus on the technical areas of posture, sequencing, and power application as well as further improvement of strength and endurance; cross training sessions will utilize a variety of activities and workouts to develop stability, mobility, strength, and power that support technique and speed in the rowing shell. Water sessions (Saturdays & Sundays) will develop technique, skill, and endurance in a variety of boats with a focus on sculling. Athletes participating in Spring Season are strongly encouraged to participate in Winter due to the benefits of the foundational work done during that period.

During the Spring season, athletes will race at many local regattas on the Lower Island with the majority taking place in March, April, and May (see Regatta Calendar below). There will also be opportunities for athletes who are at an appropriate competitive level to race at national and international regattas such as the Canadian Secondary School Championships (CSSRAs), Windermere Cup, Canadian Henley, Royal Henley, or Junior National Team Trials.
