I am happy to announce that Scott Swinkels will be joining the SMUS Community Rowing Centre and the Gorge Narrows Rowing Club as Head Junior Coach. Congratulations Scott! And congratulations rowers, for we have a great coach coming into the club! Scott is coming back to the sport full-time with a driven passion following a few years spent in the Finance and Investment Banking world. Before he was a full time investor, Scott played a key role in developing the junior structure at Victoria City Rowing Club, first working under Aalbert Van Schothorst and then taking over for Aalbert when he successfully moved over to UVic. Scott has kept his hand in the sport the entire time, helping at UVic by coaching their Novice squads. Scott will be joining the team this week to be introduced. He will officially start working with the kids January 5th, 2016. I would again

Junior Winter Rowing Program at Gorge Narrows

1 year ago 0

I am very excited about the successful start to our Winter Program.  This 5 week program will provide participants the opportunity to make many gains, both physically and technically.  They have to remember though: you only get out of it what you put into it!  The harder you push yourselves now the greater your successes will be later.   The size of the Winter Program is also very exciting.  With 27 registered participants, this program is thriving!  It is the attitude and work ethic of the participants that make it special though.  With 27 juniors making these gains the GNRC junior program will be a force to be reckoned with this spring!  Can you feel the momentum growing…because I certainly can!  With every kilometre put on the erg these kids are thinking about the race course at Elk Lake, or Shawnigan Lake or Mill Bay.  Find your next level!

The regatta was held in Vancouver, Washington on June 26th, 27th and 28th. Races were run on a buoyed 1,000 meter course on Vancouver Lake. The athletes thoroughly enjoyed the racing experience; our men’s 8+ had so much fun that they all now want to row sweep boats! Many of the athletes won their very first medal at this regatta. By the end of the regatta the team had achieved four first place finishes, five second place finishes, three third place finishes, two fourth place finishes and three sixth place finishes. Congratulations to the mixed 2x (60-64 years), women’s 2x (55-59 years), women’s 2x (60-64 years) and the mixed 4x (55-59 years) who crossed the finish line first. Well done to all crews! Our masters team is a group of dedicated
