SMUS Community Rowing Centre hosts VCRC Masters

This past weekend the SMUS Community Rowing Centre hosted 10 masters from the Victoria City Rowing Club at its morning practice.  The VCRC masters were unable to train on Elk Lake due to the GVYRS City Championships, but still had a desire to train!   The SMUS CRC was excited to be able to extend an offer for our neighbours to come and train, as VCRC was very kind to the masters group caught last year in limbo while the rowing club changed operators from the Gorge Rowing and Paddling Centre to the SMUS Community Rowing Centre.  During the transitional period our masters were invited to join in on Saturdays at Elk Lake.   SMUS CRC Masters Coaches, Connor Eldson-McLoed and Lisa Tschannen, teamed up with VCRC Masters Coach Roger Meager, to co-coach this workout and social row.  Taking the water in all boat classes with home-club masters bowing boats

GVYRS City Championships

Last weekend at the City Championships, Graeme Stewart and Max Stover raced the Junior Boys 2X for the SMUS Community Rowing Centre, and Oak Bay High School.  The Greater Victoria Youth Rowing Society (GVYRS) graciously allowed the boys to race as they both attend Oak Bay High School, and they have been accessing training within the league regulations. There were three heats to the event, seeing the heat winner automatically advancing to the final as well as the next three fastest times.  In a come-from-behind finish, the boys were able to sprint through the leaders to finish 1.5 seconds ahead of Cordova Bay in first place. 3 hours later the boys lined up in the final against the best in the city.  Off the mark one of the Cordova Bay (Claremont) crews jumped out to a substantial lead.  Graeme and Max were able to establish a solid hold on second
